Screens and Wrinkles

Have you ever gotten a headache after staring at a screen too long? Maybe your eyes have gotten dry and red after a long day at the office? It’s obvious that too much screen time can cause this to happen, but have you ever wondered what screens might be doing to your skin?

Screens- wether it be your phone, tablet, tv, or computer- emit something called blue light. It is a type of ray that comes from LED screens as well as the sun. Since blue light has more energy than other colors from the color spectrum, it is considered more harmful to our cells. Because of this, many people experience the symptoms mentioned above. Staring at the many, many screens we keep around us can break down the collagen supply in our skin, causing pre-mature wrinkles and sagging skin.

Overtime, health experts have dubbed “computer face” a non-scientific term to describe people who have developed lines on their face from excess squinting that can cause crows feet (wrinkles around the eyes), as well as lines that appear on the forehead area from the stress of the muscles constantly being used to read small text. And not only is it the screens causing wrinkles, but also staying in a seated position for extended periods os time is thought to speed up and amplify the development of wrinkles.

So what can we take away from all this information? Well, although the best would be to remove screens from your life, it is completely impractical. Instead, take more often breaks from your screens. Try to walk around after staring at your screen for a while. And when you don’t HAVE to use a screen- don’t. Practice having a non-screen related hobby when you’re out of work. But- since you can’t stay away from screens forever, don’t forget to make an appointment at BLUR so we can help you get rid of that “computer face” and say looking refreshed!
