Botox vs Filler

Here at Blur Tox Bar, one of the most frequent questions we get asked is what is the difference between botox and filler?

A lot of people confuse the two or think that botox can be used to get the same results of filler. With these two injectables being the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatments currently in the US, it’s understandable that many will get the two confused. Not to worry, we are here to help you better understand what cosmetic treatment is best for you!

Botox is an injectable neurotoxin that is used to soften and/or treat wrinkles on the face. Botox works by temporarily stoping the movement of the muscles that create these wrinkles. The most popular areas that botox is injected are the frown lines, the forehead, and the crow’s feet. But- as years have gone by, doctors have found way more treatments that botox can be used for. For example, botox can treat crossed eyes, help people who suffer from migraines, and also can be used on the underarms to help people with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Dermal fillers are also an injectable but unlike Botox, it is a product used to fill in areas of the skin (hence the name) that have lost its volume. While botox erases lines by relaxing the upper face muscles that cause lines, we cannot relax the muscles of the lower face to this degree because they are needed for smiling, eating & drinking. Filler on the other hand is a biodegradable gel that is a component of normal skin (hyaluronic acid) that physically fills in the indentation of the wrinkle without affecting muscle activity at all, therefore it is great for wrinkling of the lower face. Common areas that fillers are used in are the lips, cheeks, and areas around the mouth. Filler can plump up the skin, like the laugh lines around the mouth, to give a youthful look. It can also help to create a more youthful look in eye areas by filling in the bags under the eyes.

So, is one better than the other? Which should you choose? Well, since botox and fillers are used for completely different reasons, it’s ultimately up to you to decide what it is that you are trying to treat. Though we specialize in TOX, we suggest to always do your research and to make sure if you do decide to do fillers based on your needs, that you choose a highly trained and licensed team like the one we have here at BLUR!
